Interview with Easnadh Reddington

Which musician has influenced you the most?
There isn’t one single artist who has influenced me completely — I tend to connect more with certain songs, sounds, or ideas rather than specific people. I admire different artists for different reasons. For example, I really appreciate how Billie Eilish explores rhythm and space in melody through minimal production. I also admire how Tate McRae brings high-level dance into her artistry, combining performance and music in a strong visual way. And artists like Dua Lipa inspire me for how they influence broader pop trends — like her 80s-inspired work that helped shape a new era of pop production.

What can you teach me on your instrument better than any other teacher?
I combine vocal technique, songwriting tools, and performance coaching — whether you're just starting out or already on your artist journey. My lessons are creative, supportive, and tailored to your level, with real-world knowledge that helps turn your musical ideas into something great. I also like to showcase the difference in approach writing as an artist and as a versatile songwriter. I also focus on the different mindsets and techniques involved in writing as an artist versus writing as a versatile, style-adaptable songwriter.

How did you learn to sing?
I started in a kids’ choir and had my first singing lesson at age 12. I was also involved in a pantomime theatre group until around 15, which gave me early stage experience. At 14, I joined a pop-rock band and wrote a full album before I turned 16, playing at festivals and writing original material. At 17, I got my first commissioned songwriting gig. I briefly studied nursing in Edinburgh, continuing vocal training throughout, and later moved to London to study music full-time. That’s where I immersed myself in singing, writing, and working with artists like Don Diablo. My artist project and band have since evolved, and I’ve continued to grow creatively and professionally.

How do you go about writing a song or composing a piece yourself?
My songwriting process always starts with the intention behind the song — what it’s meant to feel like, say, or do. If I’m writing a ballad, I usually begin by finding the emotional core through piano chords that leave space for the story. For something warmer or more intimate, I’ll often pick up my nylon-string guitar to shift the tone. For production-driven tracks like drum & bass or dance, I’ll either build a simple beat in Logic Pro or work from a track I’ve been sent.
No matter the genre, I always keep the overall landscape of the song in mind — where it’s going, how it should feel, and how it fits into its style. I often visualize the story like a scene to guide the lyrics, and I get a clear sense of the shape of the melody — whether it needs to build, drop, or stay close and conversational. My process balances creative instinct with a focus on structure, clarity, and keeping things engaging — especially in a pop context, where every section has a purpose and every choice supports the hook.

What equipment do you play on today?
Warm Audio condenser mic
Sennheiser e835 dynamic mic
Yamaha e-piano with weighted keys
Nylon guitar
Western acoustic guitar (Crafter)
Fender Stratocaster
Alesis MIDI keyboard with Logic Pro.

What personal trait has helped you most in your practice?
Dedication, time investment, and self-reflection. Being analytical when listening to songs and my own work/vocals has helped me improve significantly over time.

What does your instrument have that others don't?
My voice has a powerful, expressive quality with a unique tone that can adapt — whether leading a song or blending as background. It carries both strength and emotion, allowing me to connect deeply with listeners. The songs I write resonate through vivid storytelling and emotional honesty.

What do you pay particular attention to when teaching?
My lessons combine creative exploration with structured, practical guidance — whether you're just starting to sing, want to improve your technique, or you're already performing and writing your own songs. I tailor each session to your goals and level, creating a supportive space where you can build confidence, grow your voice, and express yourself freely.

How do you structure your music lessons?
Each lesson is fully tailored to your level, voice, and creative goals — whether you’re here to sing, write songs, accompany yourself, or all three.
For vocal-focused students, we typically begin with gentle physical stretches and vocal warm-ups, followed by technique work based on your needs. This may include breath support, vocal placement, pitch control, agility, tone shaping, dynamics, belting, phrasing, interpretation, or range development. I use a mix of methods, especially CVT (Complete Vocal Technique), alongside intuitive, body-aware exercises. We then apply these techniques to songs — either ones you bring, ones I suggest, or your own originals.
For songwriting students, we focus on both the technical and emotional sides of writing. This includes melody writing, lyric development, harmonic progressions, toplining, storytelling, song structure, and arrangement. We also work on discovering and defining who you are as a songwriter — your voice, perspective, and creative identity. Some lessons may include listening analysis, reference breakdowns, or co-writing techniques.

For students working on piano accompaniment, I support both beginners and intermediate players who want to use piano as a tool to enhance their singing or songwriting. While I’m not a classical piano teacher, I’m a vocalist and songwriter who plays piano to a solid level — enough to help you with chords, rhythm, playing while singing, and using the instrument creatively. If you're an experienced player wanting to focus more on vocals, I can help integrate your playing with your singing. I don't teach advanced piano techniques, but I can guide you in making your playing more expressive, supportive, and performance-ready.

Whether you’re a total beginner or already performing and writing, I aim to create a relaxed and motivating environment where you can build confidence, grow technically and creatively, and feel free to explore your sound.

How do you approach teaching with children?
I work with students aged 12 and up. I adjust my approach based on age and personality, always aiming to boost confidence and creativity while keeping things structured and engaging.

What has been your greatest experience as a musician so far?
Getting a sync deal with Les Mills, the global fitness brand. That moment made me realize my music was resonating — if big international brands wanted to use it, I must be doing something right.

What was the biggest stage you've played on?
The SSE Hydro in Glasgow – 12,500 capacity

Which musician would you like to play with one day?
Ryan Tedder, Sia, Raye, Benny Blanco, and Charlie Puth — they’re creative powerhouses who consistently produce incredible music and hit after hit.

Which record would you take with you to a desert island?
RAYE - ‘my 21st century blues’. It’s diverse, emotionally powerful, and filled with incredible vocals and storytelling.

Which stage would you most like to play on, or do you most like to play on?
As an artist with Citrus Hues, I love small, intimate acoustic settings. For other projects as a vocalist, I enjoy large stages or with full bands — the energy is unmatched.

What else is important in your life besides music?
Outside of music, I really value traveling and experiencing new cultures — it inspires me creatively and helps me stay open-minded. I also love spending quality time with friends and family.
