Acoustic guitar or electric guitar?

Handbook for music lessons

We receive a wide variety of questions about music lessons every day. That is why we have started to compile a handbook. In it, we answer these questions as precisely as possible, together with experienced teachers. Over the next few weeks, we will be presenting topics from articles in the handbook here in the blog.
Whether to start on the acoustic or the electric guitar is one of the most frequently asked questions by adults or parents of children. We get to the bottom of this together with Omar Fra, he teaches guitar in Winterthur.
You can also find out more in the Learn to play the guitar for beginners or Learn to play the guitar for children manual article.
A matter of taste
Basically, we think it depends on your taste what kind of guitar you want to start with.
Choose the instrument that suits your favorite sound.
Omar Fra teaches electric guitar and acoustic guitar in Winterthur and has a clear opinion on the subject:
«For fast learning progress, it depends on your motivation. And motivation is known to be higher when you play your favorite instrument. It's easy to start learning on both types of guitar. It's also relatively easy to switch back and forth between acoustic and electric guitars. In principle, I think this also applies to children, especially as it is all the more important that your ideas roughly correspond to reality. Lessons are much more motivating that way.»
The opinion is often expressed that children should insist on starting with the acoustic guitar, even if they actually want to play the electric guitar. One reason for this is the feeling for the haptics and the physically produced sound: initial access via an instrument with direct sound production, i.e. without the help of electrical devices, promotes this. However, from our point of view, it makes sense to carefully consider whether this makes sense. After all, motivation can make many things possible!

Acoustic guitar
There are various acoustic guitars:
- Do you like classical music and would you like to play classical songs on the guitar?
Then choose the classical guitar with nylon strings.
- Do you like the acoustic sound of singer songwriters such as Jack Johnson or do you want to sing around the campfire and accompany yourself on the guitar?
Then choose the acoustic guitar with steel strings.
Be sure to try out different types of guitars, you might just discover the sound you want!

Electric guitar
There are also various models of electric guitars that differ in terms of sound. As the sound also depends on devices such as amplifiers or effect units, it is best to seek advice from a specialist store to ensure that your setup ultimately matches your desired sound.
If you basically like electric or distorted sounds from rock and metal or you like jazz, pop or soul, then start with the electric guitar!

We will continue to add to the handbook for music lessons in the future. If you have any questions about music lessons, please feel free to send them to us.
