We receive a wide variety of questions about music lessons every day. That is why we have started to compile a handbook. In it, we answer these questions as precisely as possible, together with experienced teachers. Over the next few weeks, we will be presenting topics from articles in the handbook here in the blog.

Singing is a very personal matter. Many people would like to sing, but don't have the confidence. In the article Learning to sing for beginners we have compiled many relevant questions for singing beginners.

Damaris Brendle, who teaches singing in Bern, explains how she usually organizes a first singing lesson and what she pays particular attention to.

Getting to know each other at the beginning is very relevant, as singing is something very personal and it has to be right on a human level. That's why the first thing is to find out whether we both feel comfortable in this context. This is the most important prerequisite for the lessons.

Together we will find out what your individual needs and wishes are regarding the lessons and whether I am the right teacher for you.

Then we get started: we warm up with physical, breathing or vocal exercises or we sing a song that you or I have brought with us.

Finally, we look to the future: if we both feel comfortable, we think about what we want to do in the coming lessons.

If it's not a good fit - there may be human, content-related or other reasons for this - we can look together with the Instrumentor team to see if there is another teacher who would be a better fit for you.

If it is not a good fit, this is nothing negative and it is important that both the student and the teacher are honest about this.

Once again, the most important prerequisite for teaching is that we both feel comfortable.
